The derailer on your mountain bike allows your mountain bike to switch gears. When you move your shifter up or down, that sends a signal through a cable that allows your derailer to move, which in turn switches your gears. Derailers need to be kept clean for proper function. Dirt and grime can impede the movement of the derailer.
